ELRC APPLAUDS SADTU KZN FOR ITS FIRM STANCE

ELRC APPLAUDS SADTU KZN FOR ITS FIRM STANCE

The Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) appreciates the sentiments expressed by the Chairperson of SADTU KZN, Phumlani Duma, who vehemently opposed relationships between teachers and their pupils, as reported in the Daily Sun on 28th June 2019.

Duma warned members that the union would not tolerate members having affairs with pupils and encouraged SADTU members to honour their responsibility to look after the children entrusted to them by parents.

The stance taken by SADTU solidifies the commitment made by the Parties to the Council (SADTU and the Department of Basic Education as Employer) to implement Collective Agreement No. 3 of 2018: Providing for compulsory inquiries by arbitrators in cases of disciplinary action against educators charged with sexual misconduct in respect of learners, and ensure that the current scourge of sexual crimes against children in our country is addressed.
